New Salesforce President and CPO Hints at Next Steps for AI and Security

By Sasha Semjonova

Salesforce has newly appointed Rohan Kumar as the company’s new President and Chief Platform Officer.

Kumar, who spent nearly 30 years at Microsoft handling security, Azure data, and AI advancements, is set to gear Salesforce toward “ambient” AI, signalling we may see Agentforce and its suite of tools act a lot more autonomously in the future. His background in infosec seems relevant at a time when Salesforce is still getting back on its feet after a difficult 12 months of data breaches suffered by its customers.

Who Is Rohan Kumar?

Rohan Kumar has spent the last 28 years at Microsoft, beginning his career at the company as a Software Design Engineer, and holding positions such as the Partner General Manager of Azure Data and, most recently, the Corporate Vice President of Microsoft Security.

During his tenure at the company, Kumar has been responsible for building Microsoft’s next-generation AI-powered data security and driving the transformation toward offering autonomous, agent-based data security and governance solutions. It appears that both of these avenues are something he will be taking forward in his new role as President and CMO.

In an open letter on LinkedIn, Kumar expressed how navigating AI’s transformative capabilities was a key part of his previous roles and now his current one, placing emphasis on how Salesforce has a unique advantage in the AI future.

“[This] is where Salesforce has an extraordinary opportunity,” he wrote. “For more than two decades, Salesforce has been the system of record and system of engagement for customer relationships. Sales, service, marketing, commerce, platform, analytics, industry clouds, Slack, Data 360, and Agentforce together represent something incredibly powerful: a trusted foundation for customer-facing work in the age of AI.”

Honing in on Ambient AI

Kumar also mentioned what could potentially become the future of Salesforce and Agentforce: ambient AI.

“I am especially excited by the idea that the future of enterprise software will become more ‘headless’ and more ambient,” he wrote. “It means the question is not simply, ‘Will people click through SaaS applications the same way they used to?’ The better question is, ‘Which platforms will agents trust when they need to get real work done, and which platforms can help companies grow while doing it?’”

Ambient AI (sometimes called ambient intelligence) refers to artificial intelligence that is seamlessly integrated into your environment to operate quietly in the background. This means that instead of requiring you to type prompts, click apps, or drive actions manually, these systems autonomously sense, interpret, and automate tasks in real-time.

If Kumar advocates for ambient AI as the direction Salesforce chooses for its AI strategy, it provides insight into what Salesforce could look like as a platform in the future.

It’s clear now that Salesforce is reimagining its UI and how its users use the platform as part of their wider tech stacks, especially after the release of Agentforce Coworker. Ambient AI could form the next part of the CRM giant’s plan to make its UI more intuitive and accessible, connecting every part of a customer’s org, including integrations, agents, and more.

A New Perspective on Salesforce Security

Kumar’s security experience also means he comes to Salesforce at a welcome time. After an extended run of Salesforce-associated security breaches and an evolving security roadmap that customers need to adhere to, there has perhaps never been a time when clear and appropriate security guidance has been needed more.

Drawing on his experience working on Microsoft’s security, Kumar is in a unique position to spearhead the future of Salesforce AI security, applying an experienced lens to important aspects like trust, governance, and guardrails.

Final Thoughts

Rohan Kumar faces a lot of pressure as Salesforce’s new President and CPO. He’s joining the company at an exciting time amidst growing AI success, but it’s likely that he understands there is still a lot of work to be done, too.

How do you think Salesforce might change with the application of ambient AI features and security through AI?
