Anthropic Says It Won’t Destroy SaaS, But Is Salesforce Safe?

Salesforce and Anthropic have been moving closer together for a while now, but Claudeforce makes that relationship much more concrete. With tighter integrations, APIs, and MCP making it easier for Salesforce customers to connect Claude with their data and workflows, the two platforms look a lot more complementary to each other rather than competitive.

This is rather interesting to me given how much of the recent AI conversation has focused on the opposite idea – AI eventually mitigating the need for traditional SaaS. Anthropic has been framed as one of the companies poised to put traditional SaaS under real pressure, but its CEO Dario Amodei sees the future rather differently.

Anthropic Doesn’t Want to Destroy SaaS, But Could It?

Speaking alongside Marc Benioff recently on CNBC, Amodei was pretty clear about Anthropic’s intentions: “We’re not interested in destroying anyone.” He described AI as a “positive sum” opportunity, which is an interesting thing to hear from the CEO of a company that has been right at the center of the so-called “SaaSpocalypse”.

There is some obvious logic behind it though – Claude is capable now of doing a lot more than answering questions in your chat window. But Anthropic doesn’t necessarily need to rebuild every piece of enterprise software from scratch. Salesforce has got all of the customer data, permissions, business logic, and decades of context that Claude needs to truly be useful inside a large company.

And naturally, Claudeforce gives Anthropic a way into that world. Claude can provide the intelligence and interface, while Salesforce provides much of what sits underneath that.

Yet, I don’t think this means Salesforce has nothing to worry about. Anthropic is becoming a huge company very quickly – angling for a $2T IPO – and the more work people can do directly through Claude, the less important individual SaaS interfaces could become. Amodei may have no immediate intention to put an end to SaaS, but there’s no real guarantee the technology itself won’t change the model significantly anyway.

This is where Headless 360 starts to look like one of Salesforce’s best moves in years. The CRM giant is effectively separating the valuable parts of its platform from the traditional Salesforce interface. This means Claude can interact directly with it, but so could ChatGPT, Gemini, or whatever the next flavor of the month is.

This affords Salesforce a lot of freedom and flexibility. It doesn’t have to bet everything on Agentforce becoming the dominant AI interface, and it doesn’t need to correctly guess which frontier AI model wins.

Salesforce probably isn’t completely bulletproof from AI disruption, but this is about as good a position it could put itself in.

Final Thoughts

With that said, all eyes are now on Salesforce’s flagship conference, Dreamforce. With Amodei confirmed to speak, the obvious question is what he’ll actually say about Salesforce, Anthropic, and the future of SaaS – and, just as importantly, what Salesforce will be ready to show.

My prediction, or at least my hope, is that we’ll see some genuinely impressive Claudeforce demos that (without sounding corny) bring the partnership to life. If Dreamforce can show Claude working deeply across Salesforce in totally new ways, it could give us the first glimpse into what the new model of SaaS might actually become.
