We’ve been hearing about the ‘SaaSpocalypse’ for some time now. Supposedly, AI tools are going to make traditional software vendors like Salesforce obsolete – or at least, seriously harm their bottom lines as their customers vibe-code their own solutions, instead of paying for them.
That’s the theory, and while Salesforce stock hit a three-year low in June, and other SaaS vendors like ServiceNow and HubSpot have faced similar woes, it’s far from certain that the nightmare scenario imagined by some will come to pass. No one can make themselves completely immune to job market disruption, but whatever the case, Salesforce professionals would do well to consider how AI is affecting the job market – and what they can do to thrive in it.
AI’s Effect on the Job Market
AI is creating a ‘two-track’ labor market. ‘Professionalized’ roles are seeing AI act as a force multiplier for experts, with more human-intensive skills needed. These roles are seeing greater growth across headcount and wages than ‘democratized’ roles where AI makes the job itself easier for non-experts to perform, according to the PwC 2026 Global AI Jobs Barometer.
Businesses that are most able to use artificial intelligence see faster headcount growth (52%) than the least AI-exposed companies (36%), along with higher wage growth: 24% vs 17%. Those most exposed to AI, dubbed “super-star companies” by PwC, saw labor productivity gains of 163%.
Roles which need specific AI skills are also growing almost eight times (69%) faster than the total jobs market (9%). The average wage premium for AI skills is also rising to 62%.
But the outlook for the entry-level market is less than rosy. PwC says that US data reveals that AI-exposed entry-level roles are seven times more likely to need traditionally senior-level skills like judgement and leadership. These roles have grown 35% since 2019. Other entry-level roles declined by 10%.
So the overall picture seems to be: good news (or at least fine news) for senior professionals; not-so-good news for others. And the PwC data isn’t the only source that spins this narrative.
A revised version of Stanford University’s paper on AI, titled No Widespread Displacement, but the AI Employment Gap for Young Workers Has Widened to 19%, was published on August 12, 2026.
The paper, which was revised with data extending through mid-2026 and updated with new evidence about the mechanisms that may be driving these patterns, uses a sample of high-frequency administrative payroll data from ADP covering millions of US workers.
The researchers made a number of findings about the labor market following the widespread adoption of generative AI. Firstly, they claimed there was ‘no evidence’ of widespread, economy-wide job displacement, but employment of young workers (ages 22–25) in AI-exposed occupations stood 19% below where it would be if it had kept pace with that of their less-exposed peers. Experienced workers showed no comparable gap.
Next, this divergence has been ‘steadily’ widening since it was first documented by Stanford in August 2025, and it operates mainly through reduced hiring of young workers, instead of increased separations.
Declines are said to be concentrated in roles where AI usage mainly substitutes for human tasks, while employment is flat or even rising where AI usage primarily complements workers, especially for experienced professionals. ‘Adjustment’ has been taking place through employment rather than base compensation. The divergence is not explained by prominent alternative factors like controlling for exposure to interest-rate increases and for remote work.
Stanford interprets these findings as early, descriptive indicators, like “canaries in the coal mine”, rather than causal estimates. Again, things seem fine for experienced professionals – but worse for newcomers. So what does this mean for the Salesforce professional?
Ride the Wave… But Remember Salesforce Fundamentals
The most important finding from the Stanford paper, for our purposes, is that declines are concentrated where AI is automating workers. Employment is remaining the same or actually increasing in areas where AI complements workers, rather than replacing them – especially for senior workers.
What that means in terms of practical advice is that it would be best to steer your role towards augmentation, rather than just performing reproducible tasks. Decision-making, ownership, client interaction, and architecture will continue to be vital skills – practical competence alone will no longer cut it.

Salesforce CTA and MVP Hall of Famer Keir Bowden told SF Ben that Salesforce professionals should learn about AI, because it’s clearly the future of the industry, and partners/customers are seeing Salesforce “bang the drum non-stop” about it.
“At some point every organization is going to want to look at the possibilities of AI, and staff that are already familiar with the technology will be in the best position,” Keir said.
But he warned against simply limiting this to Agentforce, or any single vendor, because it’s far from clear at the moment who is going to win the AI arms race. Understanding the core principles of artificial intelligence and machine learning will give you skills that can be applied to any vendor and tooling.
“Don’t neglect the fundamentals of Salesforce,” Keir said. “Going all in on AI/Agentforce positions you well for future work, but the here-and-now for Salesforce is the clouds we’ve come to know and love over the last 20 or so years.”
He reminds Salesforce professionals that the vast majority of technology budget and effort is spent on maintaining and operating existing applications rather than implementing new ones. You want to be prepared for what is coming, but not by neglecting what is already here.
What Skills Are in Demand?
According to the LinkedIn Skills on the Rise 2026 report, which examines the UK job market, the capabilities experiencing the fastest growth and highest employer demand right now are AI, machine learning and generative technologies, leadership, culture and communication.
Prompt Engineering, Chatbot Development, LLMs, Regression Analysis, and Machine Learning Operations (MLOps) are rising because, as AI adoption continues, employers are looking for skills that turn new technologies into actually usable tools. Businesses need professionals who can build, deploy, and keep AI systems working at scale.
So too are skills like Data-Driven Decision Making, Data Storytelling, Business Process Automation, and Workflow Management on the rise. AI relies on data, and produces data. Business leaders need people to make sense of it all.
And with new AI technologies ‘moving fast and breaking things’, as the old cliché goes, regulatory pressure and global uncertainty and anxiety about this change mean businesses need to go beyond traditional risk management.
Areas like Governance, Risk Management, and Compliance (GRC), along with Cyber Risk Management, Ethical Decision Making, Statutory Reporting, and Operational Excellence (OpEx) are also needed. Businesses want to adopt AI safely, while staying compliant.
Don’t Forget ‘Soft Skills’
Despite the need to get to grips with the latest AI tools – and the principles behind them – so-called ‘soft skills’ are still very much needed.
According to the LinkedIn Skills survey, leadership, project management, cross-functional collaboration and DEI expertise are also on the rise.
So too are commercial intelligence and delivery skills like strategic planning, technology roadmapping, sales negotiation, relationship management and revenue growth strategy.
Keir told SF Ben that Salesforce professionals should remember the importance of soft skills as well. “As application development and maintenance becomes more commoditised with AI, soft skills become a key differentiator,” he said.
“Being able to effectively translate business requirements, manage stakeholders, and align applications with the real business needs will allow you to stand out against the competition.”

Evaldas Zaranka, Salesforce Architect
Salesforce Architect Evaldas Zaranka told SF Ben he believes that AI is less likely to eliminate software careers entirely and more likely to change where the value sits. A lot of repetitive configuration, basic development, documentation, and support work will become increasingly automated, so simply being an expert in one particular SaaS platform may become less of a differentiator, he added.
“The people who will remain valuable are those who understand the business problem behind the technology: how processes work end to end, how systems integrate, how data should be structured and governed, and how technology can actually improve commercial outcomes,” Evaldas said.
“I’d focus on becoming broader rather than trying to compete with AI on tasks it can perform faster. Build strong knowledge around architecture, integrations, data, security and AI itself, but combine that with domain expertise and stakeholder management.
“Someone who can translate between leadership, business teams and technology – and challenge whether something should be built in the first place – is much harder to replace than someone whose value is primarily knowing where to click in a particular platform.”
Finally, Evaldas said that adaptability is probably the biggest form of career insurance. SaaS products, job titles and technical skills will continue to change quickly, so being comfortable continuously learning and using AI as a productivity multiplier rather than treating it purely as a threat will be important.
The safest position is to become the person who understands how to use the new technology to redesign the work, rather than the person waiting for the technology to redesign their role.
It appears that the safest skillset to develop is a combination of technical, commercial, and interpersonal expertise, rather than knowing one Salesforce product very well.
What Do I Learn?
As Keir mentioned in an earlier section, it’s wise to understand the principles of AI and machine learning – and not just stick to one tool – to learn the skills which can be applied across the board.
That being said, Salesforce’s own exam guidance can be a helpful insight into what the company itself views as an employable agentic-AI skillset, which it obviously wants stakeholders to get to grips with.
Even if you’re not planning on taking the Certified Agentforce Specialist Exam, if you are planning on taking Keir’s advice about getting to grips with the concepts behind AI, Salesforce’s guidance around the certification is somewhat illuminating.
It covers agent lifecycle management, Prompt Builder, grounding with Data 360, testing, the Trust Layer, governance, deployment and standards like MCP and A2A.
Learning how agents are grounded, governed, integrated, tested and put into production can help your role fall into the category of those which are augmented by AI – rather than being overtaken by it.

Timo Kovala, Solution Architect
Solution Architect Timo Kovala, author of A Complete Guide to Agentforce, thinks it’s hyperbolic to say there’s a ‘SaaSpocalypse’. He told SF Ben: “In my mind, it’s more like ‘SaaS-pression’. The runway paved by digital transformation is running out. There’s less and less money to be made by SaaS implementation. But that’s not the whole story.”
There are certain SaaS-focused skills that are going to remain in high demand as the SaaS market cools down, Timo added. One is business analysis and product ownership.
“There will always be new functional requirements to be uncovered, defined, and operationalized,” Timo said. “Another skill set is the ability to merge deterministic, agentic, and human workflows. Knowing when to use which and with what approach is key.”
Finally, analytics skills are important, if underrated. The ability to pull insights from data may just determine if a SaaS investment will generate a positive ROI.
Heather Black, CEO of Salesforce and AI training group Supermums, said that professionals should become AI-first in their approach to work. “People will hire people who work smarter, not harder, and AI increases their productivity,” she told SF Ben, adding that a key part of maximising the value of any AI tool is learning how to prompt, build and manage agents across AI stacks to optimise their use.
Learning the fundamentals of the Salesforce agent tools – Agentforce, Data 360, and now Fin – will also help, because these tools “won’t be going away” and are skills in demand, Heather said.
Final Thoughts
The jury is still out on whether the SaaSpocalypse truly is here, but whatever the reality, Salesforce isn’t going anywhere overnight. While smaller customers might make a song and dance about vibe-coding their own CRMs, more than 90% of Fortune 500 companies are still using Salesforce.
That doesn’t mean Salesforce professionals can take a breath and relax – far from it, in fact. Combining core platform skills with knowledge of AI principles (not just Agentforce), along with business and interpersonal skills, will be the best approach to making sure you carry on thriving in the Salesforce ecosystem.
