Why Salesforce’s Licensing Problem May Damage Claudeforce’s Adoption Numbers

Claudeforce is already set to be one of the biggest announcements of Salesforce’s year, but could an existing licensing problem stop the product from reaching its full potential?

With Claudeforce expected to become GA at this month’s Dreamforce conference, users who want to make the most of the new features will need a premium license. However, has this decision meant that a big portion of Salesforce’s customer base will miss out?

What Is Claudeforce?

In case you missed the memo, Claudeforce, announced during Salesforce’s latest earnings call at the end of August, is a new tool born out of the partnership between Salesforce and Anthropic. Essentially, it brings Salesforce into Claude’s interface via a new plugin with 37 prebuilt sales skills.

Salesforce in Claude operates via ‘AIforce’, an enterprise harness from Salesforce designed to deliver business data and workflows to agents using APIs, CLI tools, and MCP servers.

This expanded partnership mainly aims to combine Claude’s real-time reasoning, judgment, and adaptive decision-making with Salesforce’s trusted workflows, data, and business rules. That’s why Claude, Agentforce, and Slack are now all connected.

The Licensing Problem

According to the Cleveland Research Company Technology Council, Claude is already the default model across Slack, and according to Miguel Milano, Salesforce’s President and COO, Claudeforce is expected to become GA at this year’s Dreamforce next week.

For interested customers, however, they will need to ensure that they are either already on or willing to upgrade to Salesforce’s premium edition. According to Salesforce’s website, this used to specifically refer to the Unlimited edition.

“If you want Claudeforce, if you want Headless, if you want all these value-added agentic additions and capabilities – you need to move to our premium edition,” Marc Benioff, Salesforce’s CEO, told investors and analysts during the last earnings call. “[It’s] what’s going to give you the power to fully operate inside your enterprise and deliver this high level of capability and unleash the huge amount of value that’s been trapped for so many years.”

On the surface, this seems like nothing out of the ordinary. When Agentforce was first released, it was only available to a subset of customers, before Salesforce understood the importance of letting any customer on Enterprise Edition or above trial it through Foundations

However, according to Milano, only 5% of the knowledge workers who use Sales and Service Cloud had upgraded to the higher-end editions. So, at present, only a very small minority of customers will be able to access Claudeforce at all.

New Editions: Core, Advanced, and Max

Salesforce has recently launched three new editions: Core, Advanced, and Max. These new editions may replace Enterprise and Unlimited editions, although this has not been confirmed.

For Salesforce, which has already been heavily scrutinized for its Agentforce adoption numbers, this disparity between customers on premium licenses and what Salesforce needs to do to show Claudeforce’s value is currently quite significant.

At present, it is unclear as to how this is going to impact Claudeforce’s adoption numbers, but these new editions may have been introduced to encourage more customers to make the most of Salesforce’s AI tools. How these editions interact with Claudeforce is not yet known.

Final Thoughts

This is definitely not the last update we will hear about Claudeforce, and it may not be the last we hear about it before Dreamforce. If Salesforce is able to find a way to tackle this particular licensing issue, then Claudeforce’s numbers could really take off, but it also may not be the company’s top priority right now.

We’ll report on the news as it happens, with full Dreamforce coverage next week.
