Welcome to Salesforce! I hear you are thinking about becoming a Salesforce Administrator – that’s great! Whether you are completely new to Salesforce, or you have some Salesforce experience, I want to share some guidance to support you through your Salesforce journey and hopefully set you up for success.

I will be showing you how to use Trailhead, which is Salesforce’s free, online learning platform Salesforce professionals globally have grown to love. Trailhead has built-in gamification, getting you to complete ‘Trails’ to earn badges, and more. If you are looking for some Trailhead guidance, these trails will be for you!

Understanding Trailhead

The first and most important thing you need to learn is how to use Trailhead – this will be your place of learning for the entirety of your Salesforce career, so understanding how to navigate it is vital.

Start with the Skill Up for the Future with Trailhead trail, with a particular focus on:

Exploring Career Options

Salesforce is very good about sharing the opportunities available within their own ecosystem. They have cultivated an environment in which they provide you with the tools to understand what careers require what skills and give guidance on skill sets that will work, even for jobs outside of Salesforce.

Check out the Build Your Career in the Salesforce Ecosystem trail, paying special attention to:

Learn About Salesforce Sales Cloud

Salesforce has many different products, generally called clouds. The most commonly used one is the Sales Cloud platform. This will be the basis for almost all of the other clouds that Salesforce runs on. Therefore, when getting familiar with Salesforce and going down the route of being an Administrator, it is important to be comfortable with the Sales Cloud platform.

Follow the Discover Sales Cloud trail, starting with Sales Cloud Basics.

Get Familiar With The Lightning Interface

Back in 2016, Salesforce rolled out a new user interface called “Lightning Experience”. This interface is now on its way to being the only interface available and Salesforce will soon be saying goodbye to its Classic interface. It is imperative to understand how both platforms work, but being able to administer the Lightning interface is the way of the future.

Skill up on the Lightning interface with the Get Started with Lightning Experience trail, with key modules including:

Understand Salesforce Releases

A crucial part of working in the Salesforce ecosystem is the ability to learn and adapt everytime there is a new update to the platform. Luckily, Salesforce has a trail with guidance specifically about how to do this.

The Prepare for Salesforce Releases trail will teach you about the latest features and how to create a rollout strategy.

Get Your #AwesomeAdmin On

Ok, now we can get to the good stuff. It is time to get your Admin hat on and learn how to be a Salesforce Administrator aka Awesome Admin.

The Admin Beginner trail has everything you could possibly need to get started. In addition, the Learn Admin Essentials in Lightning Experience trail will give you a series of projects to get hands-on in Lightning.

Don’t forget The AppExchange

Salesforce is a great platform all on its own, but it can be made even greater when you include the AppExchange; the app store with thousands of apps designed to enhance the Salesforce platform.

To learn more about the AppExchange and how to extend Salesforce functionality, check out the Meet Your Business Needs with AppExchange trail including:

Security isn’t always viewed as a beginner concept for Salesforce Admins but it should be!! Security plays a vital role in how an Administrator controls who can see what, and how the external world can interact with the internals of Salesforce. I personally think that understanding the security side of Salesforce is a very important skill, even for those just starting out.

Get started with the Protect Your Salesforce Data trail, ensuring you complete:

If you have made it to the end of this article and have completed everything above you may be wondering where to go next! My recommendation would be to take a chance and try the Salesforce Administration Certification. If you pass the exam then you are on good footing to kick-start your admin career in Salesforce.
