Salesforce Exam Retake Policy: Is It Really Free?

Salesforce and Pearson are offering a free exam retake this fall. In essence, if you take and don’t pass an eligible certification exam before November 17, your second attempt is free.

“Free” is always an enticing word, so I dug into what you actually get. From what I found, this is a good deal. But, in my opinion, the savings you get may be smaller than it initially sounds. It really depends on the time you had your first take or what certification it is. There are also some things you may want to consider, so read on if you’re in for a cert and would like to weigh your scheduling options.

Before This Era

When I took my first Salesforce certification exams pre-COVID, Pearson VUE wasn’t part of the picture. The whole process was booked through Webassessor, and a failed attempt meant paying half price for the retake.

This new exam delivery via Pearson VUE only started in July 2025, when Salesforce announced that all exam certification activity would be handled through Trailhead Academy. This is also the first free retake promotion I’ve come across for Salesforce exams since then.

The Offer

This is actually not solely a Salesforce campaign, as it is a global retake promo offer from Pearson. Salesforce is one of about 40 participating exam programs, alongside the likes of AWS, Microsoft, and Cisco.

Your first exam attempt has to be scheduled, paid for, and taken between September 29 and November 17, 2026. If you fail, your retake is free, provided the cert exam you took is not a CTA or AP exam. The main catch is that your retake must be scheduled for January 4 to April 7, 2027.

How to Claim Your Free Retake Voucher

  1. Opt in to the promotion first. You can access Pearson VUE’s free retake page here. You’ll get an email with your unique promo code, which will only work after September 29 (now’s a good time to opt in!).
  1. Access your email and take note of the promo code.
  2. The email sent to you will tell you to access Pearson’s participating program* page and enter the promo code at checkout. This is, however, simply a page to purchase a Salesforce exam voucher directly from Pearson, and using the retake promo code here will yield an error.

The retake code is not applicable here, and the email gave me the misconception that it must be used here, so take it from me and use the code directly on Trailhead Academy when booking your exam!

  1. Go to Trailhead Academy and make sure you’re logged in.
  2. Go to Certifications → Find a Certification → look for the certification you’re planning to take (make sure it isn’t an Accredited Professional or CTA exam).

  1. Click Register Now, and choose whether you want to take it online or at an exam center.
  2. Click Schedule Now, and you should be redirected to Pearson VUE’s scheduling site. Follow all the prompts until you get to choose your preferred day and time for the exam.
  3. Your total amount due should show up after booking your appointment; then click Proceed to Checkout.
  4. The “Enter payment and billing” page is where you enter the retake promo code. Click the dropdown for “Add Voucher or Promo Code” and enter it. You should get something like this after:
  1. Add your preferred mode of payment and finish scheduling your exam!
  2. Once you receive an email regarding your payment confirmation, double-check that “Salesforce Free Retake Promo 2026” shows up as one of the items.

How Much Do You Actually Save?

Normally, a retake costs 50% of the original exam price. So when you think about it, the promo isn’t saving you the whole $200 or $400 fee, just the half you’d pay the second time (and that’s only if you fail as well). Having a safety net like this is nice to have, but not at the same level as a free exam.

Eligibility, Timing, and Other Things to Consider

It’s important to note that this is applicable to only one retake. So if you plan to take two or more exams, it would be wise to apply the promo to the one that you feel would be the most difficult to pass. I did try to apply the retake code to a second exam for the sake of testing this out, and I got an error:

The retake has to be the same exam, in the same language, and in the same delivery mode as your first attempt. So if you took the first one online, your retake has to be online too. It’s worth deciding up front which format you’d be happy to repeat!

Another thing: only a failed attempt earns the retake. If for some reason you missed your scheduled first attempt, you get no retake.

A bigger concern for me is the timing. There’s a specific window for scheduling the retake (January 4 to April 7, 2027), which means they can’t be taken between November 18 and January 3. So if I took my exam on the last eligible day of the promo (November 17) and scheduled my retake at the earliest allowable date (January 4), that’s about seven weeks at the very least.

Depending on your learning habits, this can be either good or bad. It gives you more time to review and study, but at the same time, keep in mind that this window has major holidays in the middle. During holidays like Christmas and New Year’s, it can be very easy to lose your study momentum. The same rings true if you fail your first attempt at an earlier date – you could be waiting close to three months!

Plus, if you need the cert for a job or a deadline, a failed first attempt means no certification for you until January at the earliest.

Final Thoughts: So, Is It Worth Planning Around?

Overall, I think this is a good deal, just a smaller one than the headline suggests. The savings are half an exam fee at best, the retake can’t happen until January, and the code only works once, so be picky about where you use it. At the end of the day, this free retake promo is only a safety net. Timing can affect your exam performance, so be strategic in choosing your exam dates!

It’s a good fit if you were already planning to sit a $200 or $400 exam this fall, you’re nervous about a tough one, and you’re not up against a hiring deadline. So if you need the cert quickly, you’re going for a CTA or AP exam, or you’re not ready yet, I wouldn’t rush and let the free retake promo push me to sit an exam early.
