Thousands of people are reporting problems with ChatGPT. Downdetector, an online resource that tracks reports of services becoming unavailable, shows more than 10,000 users reporting issues with OpenAI, with the problem seeming to start shortly after 3 PM UK time – before hitting a peak just after 4 PM.
Downdetector reports a spike in problems for other AI services including Claude, Gemini, and Grok, but these are limited to a few hundred each – nothing near the scale that OpenAI is dealing with. While SF Ben could access ChatGPT as of 5 PM BST, there appeared to be a degradation in its capabilities – with projects unable to be loaded.
What Components Are Affected?
OpenAI said at 3.58 PM: “We are investigating the issue for the listed services.”
In an update posted at 4.22 PM, they added: “We have applied the mitigation and are monitoring the recovery.”
As many as 15 components at ChatGPT have been affected by the ‘degraded performance’, including: Conversations, Login, ChatGPT, Work, Codex in ChatGPT Desktop, Compliance API, and Search.
Other affected areas include File Uploads; Voice Mode; GPTs; Image Generation; Deep Research; Agent; ChatGPT Atlas; Sites; and Connectors/Apps.
Codex has four affected components. These are:
- Codex Web
- Codex API
- CLI
- VS Code extension
